Unmasking Two Butchers of Quneitra.. How officers in Assad’s army turned the deepest valley in southern Syria into a mass grave

Thirteen years after the Wadi Tuaim massacre in Quneitra governorate, this investigation by Syrian Investigative Reporting for Accountability Journalism (SIRAJ), published in collaboration with New Lines, traces the crime and reconstructs its events, drawing on newly available evidence and the testimony of victims’ relatives, and revealing the identities of two officers in the former regime’s army who were responsible for it. The investigation documents how 13 civilians from the village of Saida al-Golan were summarily executed, how their bodies were thrown into the bottom of the valley to conceal the crime, and how residents finally recovered them once fighters from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) regained control over the area.
