Sofia Cherici

Programs Manager

Italian independent investigative journalist currently based in Istanbul. She has experience leading ambitious cross-border investigations connecting Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. She has worked with international teams to uncover opaque supply chains, environmental malpractice, urban planning failures, and corporate accountability issues, with support from international grants including Journalismfund Europe, CIJI, IJ4EU, and others.

She combines extensive field reporting with public records and financial registry research, FOI requests, data analysis, and OSINT tools. She has coordinated several successful cross-border journalism teams, including Scrap Wars (2025), a collaboration with The New Arab, SIRAJ, and El País, which uncovered how Turkey’s booming recycled steel industry is fuelled by scrap metal from war-torn countries such as Syria. The investigation ultimately contributed to Lebanon’s decision to ban scrap metal imports from Syria.

Her work has been shortlisted for the 2026 European Press Prize and the One World Media Awards. Her investigations have appeared in The New Arab, La Repubblica, Follow the Money, New Lines Magazine, and IrpiMedia, among others.

For SIRAJ, she works part-time as Programs Manager, leveraging her experience in project management and grant writing. Before embarking on her journalism career, she gained experience working in the humanitarian and development sectors in Libya, Tunisia, and Turkey.
